Biography
Josh Jarrett is a dedicated pianist and piano teacher based in Warner Robins, Georgia. With over 15 years of piano study and a deep commitment to music, Josh is known for his thoughtful artistry, teaching expertise, and original compositions in the New Age genre.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Josh’s musical journey began at age 13 when he started piano lessons with Claire Ritter, a respected pianist and jazz composer in North Carolina. Under her guidance, he developed a solid foundation in both technical and expressive aspects of the piano, setting the course for his future in music.
Josh also spent two summers at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, where he participated in their prestigious piano program. The intensive experience at Interlochen offered Josh invaluable opportunities to develop his technical skills while being surrounded by fellow young musicians from around the world. “The S-Huts of Interlochen are a hidden gem tucked away in one of the most beautiful corners of the world,” Josh recalls. “Much of my love for classical piano was found there.”
Advanced Studies and Artistic Development
During his high school years, Josh attended the Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte before moving to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) for his final two years. At UNCSA, he studied under renowned professor Eric Larsen, who helped shape his understanding of classical piano and fostered his passion for the music of the 17th to 19th centuries.
At UNCSA, Josh immersed himself in the works of composers like Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin, finding his niche in classical music. He graduated with a Diploma with Concentration in Piano, reflecting his growth as both a musician and a performer.
Looking back on his time at UNCSA, Josh is grateful for the experience, acknowledging that while he learned a great deal, he wishes he had pushed himself even further in his studies. His appreciation for his mentor, the late Professor Larsen, continues to influence his approach to music today.
Collegiate Pursuits and Refined Focus
After graduating, Josh briefly explored jazz piano at Guilford College but soon returned to his focus on classical music and New Age composition. While jazz introduced him to new ideas, it was the rich harmonic structures of classical piano and the meditative qualities of New Age music that truly resonated with him.
Professional Journey and Teaching Philosophy
Josh is an instructor at Performa Lesson Studios in Warner Robins, where he fosters an engaging learning environment for students of all ages. His teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of music theory, technical skill, and artistic expression, helping students develop a well-rounded approach to the piano.
"I believe in helping students build a strong foundation in music theory and sight-reading," Josh says. "It allows them to visualize the music in front of them, which is especially useful on the piano."
Compositions and Artistic Vision
In addition to teaching, Josh has pursued his passion for composing New Age solo piano music. His four albums showcase a blend of classical influences with modern, reflective themes, and he is currently working on his fifth. This shift into New Age music reflects Josh’s evolving artistry, as he strives to create music that both soothes and uplifts.
While he continues to grow as a composer, Josh remains a lifelong student of the piano. "I believe the best teachers never stop learning," he notes. "The piano has been a guiding force through life’s ups and downs, and I’m committed to sharing that experience with others."
